One Health Hirola
Conservation Approach

Given the recurrent disease outbreaks affecting wildlife, humans, and livestock, the Hirola Conservation Programme (HCP) works in close partnership with local government agencies to implement a long-term One Health approach.

This integrated framework seeks to understand zoonotic and cross-species disease dynamics, strengthen surveillance, and proactively manage potential outbreaks.

The importance of this approach is underscored by the historical collapse of the hirola population following the rinderpest epidemic, which nearly wiped out the species across its range.
