About HCP
HCP (Hirola Conservation Program) is an indigenous, non-profit organization based in Garissa County, Kenya. The project is primarily dedicated to promoting conservation of hirola antelope (Beatragus hunteri) in eastern Kenya.
The project originated from a global concern about the decline in hirola populations coupled with a limited conservation effort, as the hirola occur along the border regions and past conservation efforts had been limited to opportunistic field visits.
Establish and sustain a conservation programme to make lasting contributions to the future of the hirola antelope and of the local communities within the hirola’s geographic range.
Our Vision
Establish and sustain a conservation programme to make lasting contributions to the future of the hirola antelope and of the local communities within the hirola’s geographic range.
Because the hirola occur outside formally protected area and therefore a strong in-situ programme was identified as the ultimate solution to curb on-going hirola declines. hcp started as an individual effort in 2005 following Dr Ali’s recruitment into the National Hirola Management Committee, then as small community based organisation-CBO in 2008 and finally formally registered as Non-profit organisation in 2014.
